About the Course: Flight Instructor (FI)
The aim of the Flight Instructor Course is to provide the candidate with the ability to train a student
to the level required for the issue of a license/rating.
Pre-entry Requirements
An applicant for an FI certificate shall:
- Have received at least 10 hours of instrument flight instruction on the appropriate aircraft category, of which not more than 5 hours may be instrument ground time in an FSTD.
- Have completed 20 hours of VFR cross-country flight on the appropriate aircraft category as PIC.
- Hold at least a CPL(A).
- Have completed at least 30 hours on single-engine piston powered aeroplanes of which at least 5 hours shall have been completed during the 6 months.
Time Scale
The FI training course includes:
- 25 hours of teaching and learning.
- At least 100 hours of theoretical knowledge instruction, including progress tests.
- At least 30 hours of flight instruction, of which 25 hours shall be dual flight instruction, of which 5 hours may be conducted in an FFS, an FNPT I or II or an FTD 2/3. The remaining 5 hours may be mutual flying (that is, two applicants flying together to practice flight demonstrations).
- The assessment of competence is additional to the course training time.
About the Course: Instrument Rating Instructor
The course IRI (A) – Instrument Rating Instructor aims to qualify you as an instructor for training in instrument flight.
Pre-entry Requirements
An applicant for an IRI certificate shall:
- Provide training in FSTDs during an approved training course at an ATO, have completed at least 200 hours of flight time under IFR after the issuance of the BIR or the IR, of which at least 50 hours shall be in aeroplanes
- Provide training in an aeroplane, have completed at least 800 hours of flight time under IFR, of which at least 400 hours shall be in aeroplanes
- Meet the requirements of points FCL.915.CRI(a), FCL.930.CRI and FCL.935 in case of IR(A) for Multi-Engine Aeroplanes.
An applicant for an IRI certificate shall:
- Have completed at least 200 hours of flight time under IFR, of which a maximum of 50 hours may be instrument ground time in an FFS, an FTD 2/3 or an FNPT II
- Comply with points FCL.915.CRI(a), FCL.930.CRI and FCL.935 in the case of multi-engine aeroplanes.
Time Scale
The IRI training course includes:
- 35 hours of theoretical knowledge instruction,
- 10 hours of flight instruction
About the Course: Class Rating Instructor (CRI)
The aim of the CRI training course is to train aircraft licence holders to the level of competence
adequate to a CRI of SE and/or ME Aircraft.
Pre-entry Requirements
An applicant for a CRI certificate shall have completed at least:
- For multi-engine aeroplanes:
- 500 hours flight time as a pilot on aeroplanes
- 30 hours as PIC on the applicable class or type of aeroplane
- For single-engine aeroplanes
- 300 hours flight time as a pilot on aeroplanes
- 30 hours as PIC on the applicable class or type of aeroplane.
Time Scale
The training course for the CRI shall include, at least:
- 25 hours of teaching and learning instruction
- 10 hours of technical training, including revision of technical knowledge, the preparation of lesson plans and the development of classroom/simulator instructional skills
- 5 hours of flight instruction on multi-engine aeroplanes or an FSTD representing that class or type of aeroplane, including at least 3 hours on the aeroplane, or at least 3 hours of flight instruction on single-engine aeroplanes
About the Course: Synthetic Training Instructor (STI)
The aim of the STI training course is to train the Candidate to carry out synthetic flight instruction in the appropriate aircraft category for:
- The issue of a licence.
- The issue, revalidation or renewal of an IR and a class or type rating for single-pilot aircraft, except for single-pilot high performance complex aeroplanes.
Pre-entry Requirements
Applicants for the issue of an STI certificate shall:
- Hold, or have held within the 3 years prior to the application, a pilot licence, and instructional privileges appropriate to the courses on which instruction is intended.
- Have completed in an FSTD the relevant proficiency check for the class or type rating, in the period of 12 months immediately preceding the application.
Time Scale
The training course for the STI shall comprise at least 3 hours of flight instruction related to the duties of an STI in an FFS, FTD 2/3 or FNPT II/III, under the supervision of an FIE.
About the Course: FI / IRI Seminar
The aim of the Flight Instructor Refresher seminar is to allow the Flight Instructor or Instrument Rating Instructor to comply with the requirements of FCL.940 in order to revalidate or renew his/her Instructor rating.
Pre-entry Requirements
Instructors with a current or expired FI(A) / IRI(A) rating.
Time Scale
Flight Instructor Refresher Seminar should run for at least 2 days (1 day = 6 hours).
